Hydropower is that power that is derived from the energy or force of moving water. This energy or force is tapped and used in various fields.
Its advantages include;
- In irrigation. Water wheels are turned by hydropower to raise water that is channelled to agricultural fields.
- In transportation. Hydropower has been used since time immemorial as a means of transport. In particular, large forest farms near big rivers use the water to transport timber down stream by simply placing the timber in the river.
- In the production of electricity. Hydropower is effectively harnessed to produce electricity. This is done by building huge dams across a river to collect the water. This water is then released and turns electricity generating turbines below.
- Ocean surface wave motion has energy that can be harnessed to turn turbines that produce electricity.
- Deep and shallow waters of the ocean have a big difference in temperature. Ocean thermal energy conversion is employed to tap the energy created by this difference.
