ADVANTAGES OF FEDERALISM

Federalism is a form of political establishment where there is a central governing authority with autonomous regions. The auonomous regions have their own institutions and conduct their own affairs. The regions are referred to as federations. The regions and the central authority are bound through a constitution.

Its advantages are;

Ø  Federalism provides a solution where a particular region that feels that its interests are not catered for by the central authority can conduct its own affairs. This minimizes chances of rebellion in a state.

Ø  Federalism allows for legislative power to be spread over several regions. This avoids situations in which the majority of citizens opposed to the views of a single legislature decide to take up arms in rebellion.

Ø  Federalism eradicates the possibility of dictatorship. The executive with too much power concentrated on it can easily turn dictatorship. With federalism, executive power is spread to the regions.

Ø  Federalism allows a people with the same traditions, religion and culture to conduct their affairs freely in their own region.

Ø  Federalism ensures that each region pursues developments of their own choice rather than one that is decided upon by the central authority which might not be of much benefit to a particular region.
