ADVANTAGES OF FOSSIL FUELS

Fossil fuels are fuels that occur naturally under the ground. These fuels are formed through the process of anaerobic decomposition of buried organisms and plants. The decomposition process takes millions of years to result in fuel.

Fossil fuels are mostly in the form of carbons and hydrocarbons. They include methane, petroleum and coal. They are non-renewable sources of energy.

Fossil fuel advantages include;

Ø  They can be oxidized to produce carbon dioxide and water, resulting in energy.

Ø  Coal is used in furnaces to melt heavy metals. This is because coal is much cheaper compared to other sources of energy.

Ø  Petroleum (oil) is used instead of animal oils for lighting. Previously, animal oil, particularly whale oil was used instead. This posed a danger to the survival of whales.

Ø  Natural gas is used widely as a source of energy.

Ø  Fossil fuel is used in internal combustion engines and power stations.

Ø  Fossil fuels provide a good source of energy that otherwise would have been sourced from other sources thereby affecting the environment negatively.

Ø  Fossil fuels are used in industries as a source of energy for production of heavy machinery.

Ø  Fossil fuels are a source of livelihood for millions who are employed in the petroleum industry.
