ADVANTAGES OF ETHANOL

 

Ethanol is a highly volatile and flammable colorless spirit. It is commonly referred to as pure alcohol.

 

Ethanol is produced through the fermentation of sugar. It can also be produced from the by-products of petroleum refining. Its advantages include;

 

Ø  Fuel. Ethanol is used as fuel for internal combustion engines.

Ø  As a drug. Ethanol is a poweful psychoactive drug.

Ø  Ethanol is used in thermometer instruments as it is very stable.

Ø  Ethanol is used as a solvent of substances for human consumption. These include colourings, flavourings and in some medicines.

Ø  Ethanol is used in chemistry as a feedstock for the synthesis of other products.

Ø  Ethanol can be used as a source of heat and light.

Ø  Ethanol is used as an antiseptic in medical wipes. It acts as an antibacterial hand sanitizer. It kills organisms through protein denaturization. It is also effective against fungi infections.

Ø  Ethanol is used as an antipoison agent. This is especially where toxication results from other alcoholic substances. Ethanol acts by competing for the dehydrogenase enzyme, thereby preventing toxication.

Ø  Ethanol is used by by artists in designing and sketching their works. It is a good marker in these processes.
