Avoid STAMMERING
“Mummy, I ,I, I, I, I, I, wa wa wa want! to to drink water.”
I guess you are wondering and trying to figure out what exactly it is I wrote above… that’s good. Any progress in the past few seconds? Okay, let me help you out – that’s someone’s speech experience somewhere. I experienced this myself at a certain time in my childhood development and I have somehow carried the effect on into my adult life. It is a sample of what stammering, otherwise known as stuttering sounds like. Do you or have you anyone around you who you remember now? Read on.
Stammering is a medical condition which affects the speech of kids and adults alike. Kids in learning to speak experience a form of repetition of syllables and words, but outgrow it with time as they grow older and have mastered those words. In adults however, it’s a condition that could be externally caused (short-term) or internally inherent (long-term) speech disorder. Externally, when one is not sure of what to say, he or she may stutter, e.g during interrogations.
Truth be told, this condition of stuttering is about four times more common in boys than in girls at the tender ages of development, due partly to a few neurological reasons and there are a few ways to attempt to treat this condition. I’ll tell you how I handled mine. When way back in high school, I discovered I had this condition, I devised a measure to help myself – I just spoke faster. I have done this till today. Early diagnosis is very helpful today in helping the stutterer overcome this challenge.
The help of a good speech language pathologist should be used early. When a thorough examination has been done, then a number of treatments could be employed depending on the diagnosis. Such therapies as Fluency Shaping and Stuttering Modification can be used to teach the person skills, strategies, and behaviours that help better oral communication.
We must keep in mind that stammering is not an attempt at not trying to communicate effectively. We should therefore focus on the message content and not necessarily how it is coming across.
